We are living in exponential times. Artificial intelligence is advancing fast, and major breakthroughs in physics, mathematics, and biology are just around the corner. We believe humanity is heading toward a future of abundance. But like the industrial revolution, this transition will bring a period of turmoil before we arrive.
This is also a time of disconnection. We live in an ultra-connected world of Zoom meetings, Slack channels, and constant email, yet many of us feel isolated. We commute surrounded by people staring at phones, hardly making eye contact. It is possible to live in a great city and still be profoundly alone.
Most people will passively experience this shift. We choose to actively prepare. Together.
We believe the world cannot be reformed from within its existing structures, but a small, aligned group can build a framework that allows its members to navigate those structures with far greater freedom and effectiveness than any individual could alone. A village within the world, not apart from it.
Aretepolis is a small, vetted group of builders and independent thinkers who gather infrequently to navigate this transition together.
The Charter
Principles
- Self-sovereignty. We own ourselves: our bodies, our minds, our data, our wealth, our choices. We resist systems that would manage us without our consent.
- Decentralization first. We prefer distributed systems over centralized authority, in technology, governance, and association. Power held locally is power held accountable.
- Building over passive critique. We are oriented toward creating alternatives, not reforming existing systems. We do not argue with the old world; we build alongside it.
- Free association. We come together voluntarily. No one is compelled to join, and no one is compelled to stay. The group exists only because its members choose it, freely and repeatedly.
- Arete. We hold each other to a higher standard. Not perfection, but the full realization of each member’s potential, intellectual, social, and personal.
Commitments
As a member of Aretepolis, I commit to:
- Show up. Attend gatherings, contribute to discussions, and be present. Not just physically, but fully.
- Hold confidences. What is shared within Aretepolis stays within Aretepolis. Without this, nothing else works.
- Bring real problems. Not performance. I will bring my hardest problems and listen to others with the seriousness they deserve.
- Help, not sympathize. When a fellow member faces a challenge, I will offer real help where I can, not just sympathy. When I face one, I will accept help when it is offered.
- Be accountable. I will follow through on what I commit to. If I cannot, I will say so. Silence and drift are not acceptable here.
- Stay free. I will use this group to increase my freedom and that of my fellow members, not to entangle myself or others in obligations that diminish it.
Affirmation
I have read this charter. I understand what Aretepolis is and what it asks of me. I accept these principles and commitments freely and without reservation.
I am ready.
Aretepolis is invitation-only. Membership is curated by the founders. We do not accept applications.
If you have received an invitation, you are already known to us. If you have not, the right introduction will find its way.
